Importance of the Himalayas:


a) Natural barriers :

1) The Himalayas act as natural barriers protect the country from foreign invasions. 

2) They obstruct cold Siberian winds from entering India and thus protecting the Indo-Gangetic plains.


b)Sources of rainfall

3) They are responsible for causing the rainfall.

4) They are responsible for monsoon type of climate conditions in Indian sub-continent. 

5) India without Himalayas would have been a tropical desert.


c) Origin of perennial rivers : 

6) The glaciers in the Himalayas are the sources of the Great Himalayan rivers..

7) They provide large potential for hydro-electric power. 

8) They are the chief sources of water for irrigation.


Forest wealth:

9) The slopes of the Himalayas are covered with a dense Alpine forests which yield wood and other raw material for the forest based industries. 10) They are the store house of many minerals like copper, lead, zinc, precious stones etc..


e)Scenic beauty-tourism development: 11) The beautiful valleys and hill stations provide natural scenic beauty, which in turn attract tourists from different parts of the world.

12) They are promoting tourism and foreign exchange earnings.


f)Cultural exchange :

13) Through the passes like Khyber. Bolan, etc., there was a great exchange of culture commerce with the neighbouring countries in the ancient times.

14) They are the of India and are considered as the paradise on the earth.
